Coping strategies for anxiety

Coping strategies for anxiety - Michelle Patton Therapy

Stress and Anxiety is an everyday problem for people from all walks of like. Anxiety doesn’t differentiate between age, occupation or postcode.

We have a natural instinctive response to danger, through our limbic system which is designed for our safety. Think of this as a big emergency button. When this is activated, it transmits messages of danger, it calls us to action activating our flight/fight freeze response. These responses are unconscious and we instinctively move away from danger.

This is a response that we need in a dangerous situation – it keeps us safe.

What happens when we’re not in danger and this response is activated due to a perceived or imagined threat?

The emergency button gets activated as we believe we are in danger. In effect, we activate a stress response when we are in fact safe. This type of reaction can disturb a person’s ability to function in a “normal” situation and can manifest as anxiety, stress, panic, depression, PTSD and trauma.
